The Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park is jointly administered by the National Council of Protected Areas -CONAP- and by the Directorate of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports -MICUDE-. The PNYNN constitutes a unique co-administration model for the management of protected areas in Guatemala that seeks to guarantee that decision-making is carried out under a consensus process and that local communities receive tangible benefits from the conservation of the Park.
To comply with this, the Yaxha Patrimonial Fund was created, which is aimed at supporting initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of the Park and the communities of influence. This fund is administered by an Advisory Council made up of: the Executive Secretary of CONAP, the Minister of Culture and Sports, the Director of the Peten University Center of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, the Director of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism, the Mayor Municipal de Flores (Peten), the Municipal Mayor of Melchor de Mencos (Peten) and a representative of the 12 surrounding communities.
The funds collected by tourist visits to the Park are invested in strengthening the integral development of the Yaxha region since they favor both the economic development of the communities of immediate influence and the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Park. The participation of neighboring communities in tourist activity has been encouraged and a process of change from practices based on deforestation and predation towards conservation practices and involvement in the provision of tourist services has been carried out.
The communities have organized into four associations to provide services to tourists:
The Yaxha Tourism Community Guides Association offers the service of certified community guides to visit the four monumental sites of the Park: Yaxha, Topoxte, Nakum and Naranjo. In case of staying overnight at the sites, the guides offer complete packages that include the placement of tents, sheets, food, utensils and water.
The Yaxha Tourism Community Guides Association was formed in 2008 and currently has 26 guides from five communities in the area; 20 of them have a Community Guide card endorsed by INTECAP. Eight of the guides work in the Park as resource guards. The guides are constantly receiving training although they are not yet guiding in English.
